Euro 2008 Final. Germany 0-1 Spain
Euro 2008 game review.
Germany went in to this final strong favorites, even though the Spaniards were statistically on better form. Germany looked very shaky in their semi final against Turkey, and it was a lucky late winner that put them through in to the final. Spain, however, had not lost a game since 2006, and looked on top form in every single on of their Euro 2008 fixtures.
The game started off with the Germans looking the more impressive side, making good opportunities and doing some good crosses. Germany definitely looked the more likely team to score until around half way through the first half, when Spain started to play the football they’re capable of, and they were unlucky not to score when a Torres heard hit the post.
There was nothing that Germany could do to stop the first goal of the game, though. A brilliant through ball by Xavi cut the German defence in two, with Fernando Torres racing forward, and calmly chipping the ball over Jens Lehmann and in to the empty net. Between the goal and the half time whistle, Spain continued to dominate, but to no further avail as they went in for the half time break leading by one goal.
Shortly after the interval, Germany looked lively once again, and before the sixtieth minute they had plenty of chances to score, but once again Spain took control of the game, and after that the Germans never really looked like getting back in to the match. Spain might have scored at least two more goals in the second half, but the Germans somehow managed to keep them at bay until the final whistle blew.
Overall, a sensational game, with Spain playing very enjoyable football, stroking the ball around with ease. The Germans, however, didn’t look too convincing, and for the first time in forty four years, Spain is the European Champion.
Final Score:
Germany 0 – 1 Spain
