Fun and Basic Tricks for Training Your Dog
If you want your dog to be trained, it must not be for the sheer amusement of seeing your dog perform tricks.
It is because a man’s best friend should be treated as it deserves.
Some people enroll their dogs in obedience schools after the first six months, but pet owners and the pets themselves find it frustrating sometimes. For one, the dog doesn’t know what is expected from him. For example, in giving your dog a heel command, you are not asking him to do only one thing but your dog is totally dependent on your actions as well.
The “Sit” Command
The sit command is pretty universal. This basic command is very useful and means that the dog respects his owner. You wouldn’t want the dog running around your flowers in the garden or jumps excitedly when he sees your mother. You simply tell the dog to sit and peace is restored.
When teaching your dog to obey the sit command, it is best to prepare a treat for him. Don’t force the dog into correct position by tagging at his leash. You can coax the dog to come to you with his favorite treat and when he is approaching you, slowly tilt your hand a little over his nose and the top of his head until he positions his butt into the floor while watching your delicious treat. Praise him for the good work and give him his treat.
Get to know more dog commands
As an owner, you have done very well by teaching your dog to sit. From this, your dog is ready to learn more commands.
The “Stand” Command
From the sit position, pull the leash and ask the dog to “stand.” Like the sit command, prepare a treat for him so he’ll like doing what you want him to do. The stand command is also very useful when getting his routine grooming.
The “Stay” Command
The “stay” command might be hard to comprehend. In sit and stand commands, your dog knows that you are asking him to do a specific thing. The stay command however is tricky. You want your dog to do nothing and hold still his position.
Try the stay command by combining with other commands such as sit. When the dog is in a “sit” and breaks it, you can tell him to “stay” until he resumes the sit position.
The “Come” Command
The “come” command comes naturally to most dogs. Usually the dog will come to you when you call his name. Otherwise, prepare a treat for him to get attention. Don’t forget to praise him for every correct thing he does. The dog will remember your praises and will think that he has given you pleasure.
Fun Training for You and Your Dog
Now that your dog has learned these basic commands, don’t stop teaching him new ones. Your dog’s training can be a good venue for you to bond and have fun with each other. Just don’t overdo it and take frequent breaks.
